2008-2009 Chicago Blackhawks Awards

With the Blackhawks season wrapping up last week at the hand of the much hated, yet respected, Detroit Red Wings we here at Roman Is Burning would like to take our hats off to this bunch.  They successfully pulled off the most amazing turn around in sports history; they got the city of Chicago excited about hockey again and restored the Mad House on Madison.

Even though the season ended without captain Johnny Toews hoisting the Cup it doesn’t mean we can’t hand out our own awards…

The Chasin’ Paper Award – Martin Havlat

Each year since he has been a member of the Hawks, Marty found opportunity after opportunity to not be on the ice.  Constantly getting hurt Marty was well on his way to being a huge bust for Chicago hockey.  Then all of the sudden in his contract year Marty found a way to have a huge year…imagine that.

The Lord Helmet Award – Niklas Hjalmarsson

Little Nicky came up for good after the James Wisniewski trade and played really well for the Hawks.  Now I don’t know if it was a running joke or what but Hjalmarsson’s helmet was way too big and he coupled that with one of the biggest visors you will ever see this side of Nicklas Lidstrom.

The Pat Perkins Award – Dustin Byfuglien

This award won’t mean much to most of you, this is except if you know our friend Pat Perkins.  In a shear look-a-like contest these two are a spot on match.

The James Brownlee ‘Stealing from the Program’ Award – Brian Campbell

At the beginning of this year the Hawks gave Brian Campbell a huge contract, most people saw this as a good move as Campbell was one of the most sought after free agents in all of the NHL.  While ‘Soup’ but up respectable numbers all year, he even made the All-Star team, he in no way lived up to his huge contract.

The Show Me the Money Award – Duncan Keith

Seriously pay the man.

The I Don’t Want to Fight Anymore Award – Adam Burish

Now this guy is by far my favorite player on the Hawks, he plays with energy, stirs the pot and protects his teammates when the situation calls for it.  Last year it seemed like Burish was throwing fists every game (16 fights), then for some reason this year (5 fights) he just stopped fighting.  I don’t know if he was just tired of getting his butt handed to him, he isn’t a very good fighter, or he just wanted to be known as more of a skill guy, either way next year we’d like to see Burish back trading skin.

Again a great year by a team with a lot of promise, and if you need any help getting fired up for next year just watch these two videos.
